The Freedom From Oil Campaign is working to end America's oil addiction, stop oil wars, and curb global warming by convincing the auto industry to dramatically improve fuel efficiency and eliminate vehicle greenhouse gas emissions. Launched by RAN, Global Exchange, and the Ruckus Society in 2003, the campaign is pushing automakers to break their addiction to oil, create more jobs, and meet consumer demand for green cars by producing more fuel efficient vehicles.

Exxon to Pay for Air Violations

Bloomberg News

ExxonMobil Corp. agreed to pay $400,000 in penalties to California for air-permit violations at its biggest West Coast refinery. It also agreed to spend up to $2 million on a plan to cut excessive emissions of carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds and other pollutants from its Torrance plant, the company said today in a public filing.

A March 22 failure in a sulfur-recovery unit at the Torrance
plant triggered shutdowns of other refining equipment and the release of nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide and other substances, ExxonMobil said. The company agreed to a $250,000 penalty for the March incident. ExxonMobil paid an additional $150,000 to settle various violations at the Torrance facility that occurred earlier.
